Pérou:Les experts prédisent une éruption au volcan Ubinas dans les prochains jours

Publié le par 2012

Ubinas volcano specialists recorded a rise in magma over the last week as it sent small car sized rocks out of its crater. In the coming days scientists are expecting a rise in volcanic activity and for it to persist over a period of a couple days, according to the Scientific Committee of Permanent monitoring of the volcano, reports El Comercio. They recommend that the local communities maintain an alert level of orange in case of a significant eruption. The committee released a statement that the volcano is showing an increase in seismic activity and emission of ash and gases. This is significant as the volcano had been calm for two months, according to El Comercio. On July 25 the volcano registered the largest explosion of the year and the month of July saw the highest activity in the second and third weeks. In that time Ubinas volcano reached an energy level of 507 MJ (megajoule) according to El Comercio. Ashes and rocks reached distances of up to 20 kilometers from the crater and fell on nearby villages. Villages in the east and southeast directions of the volcano saw the ash and smelled sulfuric gases shortly after the large eruption. The experts from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) and the Geological Institute of mining and metallurgy (Ingemmet) recommend that locals wear gloves and goggles when necessary.
